The Postpartum Health Alliance is called to action by this long overdue and pivotal moment in our country. We are proud to stand in solidarity with providers, parents and other racial justice advocates against the institutional and systemic oppression of the Black community. Working hand in hand with our professional members, this month we renew our investment and our pledge to prioritize meaningful and measurable change. We are committed to fighting racism and dedicated to prioritizing practices and actions that promote true inclusivity, healing and equity within our organization.

And while words are an important part of the healing process, we understand that actions speak louder. We believe it will be our sustained effort and intentional choices that produce the long-term changes we collectively desire and that the Black community rightfully deserves.

To that end, PHA is immediately implementing the following are actions:

  1. Establishing a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEIA) Subcommittee to the Board of Directors (unanimously approved on 6/10/2020).
  2. Ensure the DEIA subcommittee’s ideas and oversight are woven into the fabric of PHA’s operations and planning by adding an Equity Chair as a permanent position to the Board of Directors.
  3. Promote ongoing board development by requiring the Board of Directors to complete four DEIA continuing education hours each calendar year.

This is only the beginning; our efforts will not end there. Our ongoing endeavors and new initiatives will be developed by the DEIA Subcommittee to ensure that our organizational priorities reflect PHA’s commitment to equity and anti-racism and are guided by diverse voices that are inclusive and representative of the communities we serve.

We understand that meaningful change takes hard work, grace and humility. Mistakes will be made along the way, but we are confident that, together, we can and will do better.

As the humans behind PHA, we promise, no matter how uncomfortable things get, we will continue to listen, to keep showing up for the hard conversation and most importantly, to never give up.

Black Lives Matter.

Thank you for supporting and being a part of PHA’s past and present efforts. We are honored to be on this journey with you and are hopeful for what the future holds.

With humble hearts and sincere gratitude,
